Consequences of Stress on Children's Development

I chose to explore hunger only because when my dad was growing up alot of food he was given to eat for meals was usually stale or food that has been there for a while. He was one that would eat whatever was given to him because he was not sure when the next good meal was coming his way. When my dad was raising children he would work two jobs to make sure his children had what they needed on a daily basis.
I used to be a foster parent and seen alot of children come into my home that either got very little food to eat or they had no food in their home at all. When children were placed into my home the first thing we did was get them cleaned up and then I always made sure they had a good meal. As a parent I always make sure there is some kind of food in my house for the children to eat even if it is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. All the children that are in my house know they can eat until they are full and can have anything they want just as long as they eat it and do not waste the food. I have always told them there are children in other countries that do not have what we have, so please do not waste food.

The country I chose to explore was Hunger in China, and found out some amazing things I did not know. China is one of the largest producers and consumers of the agricultural products. There is about 40% of china's labor force that is engaged in the agricultural, but there is only about 10% of the land which is suitable for culivation or agricultural. China is very limited to the amounts of food that they can grow. There is around 30 million people in the China area who are starving because they do not get enough food supply on a daily basis. This is one that really amazed me, but you do hear about it everyday of kids going hungry all the time which really hurtd my feelings.

Thank you for the information about China. I was unaware of the high percentage of people who go without food. I had always thought that China was one of the countries that was blessed in the area of food.
I agree that we need to teach children the importance of being thankful for what they have. I think that it is wonderful that the foster children are welcomed to eat until they are full. It is great to hear someone working hard to stand up and make a difference in those children's lives. So many of them have not experienced that generosity before, and it will defiantly be something that they remember for the rest of their lives.

Robin, I am glad that you have such a strong support for not wasting food, and making sure that your children have good food to eat. I am sorry to hear about your father's past, if it weren't for his story, you wouldn't have the knowledge and experience you have today. Very inspirational post. Thanks.

I teach in an urban school district and you wouldn't believe how many students go hungry. My school has a breakfast program which begins at 7:50am. On Monday morning, students start lining up outside the door as early at 7:00am. It was sad to think that some or even most of these kids barely had something to eat all weekend. Now there is a Backpack Program in place for the students. Friday afternoon, students receive a backpack filled with food that is ready to eat or easy to prepare. It is not the solution to the problem of hunger, but it is a step in the right direction.

Robin,
I did not know about the hunger issue in China. You would think that because of their agruiculture background this would not be an issue for them. I will have to do more research about this stressor among the Chinese population.
