Diversity And Culture
After exploring to have three people to define what Culture and Diversity mean in their own words. I have asked my co-worker, My boss, and my son's friend to share what they think Culture and Diversity are in their own words. All of them are not sure what they mean, but will give it a try.
1) My Boss
Culture- an electic mix of ethnicities/ nationalities, diverse in the way they live, work, eat , play, etc. Not of the "norm", uniqueness.
Diversity - Is the blending of cultures a mix of people within an area.Uniqueness, not of the standard norm.
2) My Co-Worker
Culture - quality in a person that emerges from their family, friends, and environment.
Diversity - means difference
3) My son's friend
Culture - How people go about their lives in how they practice religion, how they conduct their household, raise children, etc.
Diversity - Differences in people, life that create an invisible barrier created by classifications or characteristics, called diversity.
After exploring the answers to how they all defined Culture and diversity, and how each one was not the same they was all different. They had their view on what they thought Culture and Diversity was in their own mind. Culture to me is the way you raise your children, the religion you practice, and any traditions you have within your family. There are so many ways to define Culture it is really hard to come up with a short verison of Culture it is to each own. The three I chose to define Culture and diversity gave it a good shot of what they thought it was in their own words. I do think they really did not think about the two words before defining them. As for the word Diversity i believe that for the most part they have a good understanding of what Diversity means. I think for the answer they gave goes with what we have been studying some of the answer might have a little bit more than they need. I do not think anything has been omitted, but by reading their answers it has given me a little more knowledge on what Culture and diversity mean. It gave me ways that others think about Culture and diversity and what knowledge they might have to share as well. What has influenced me is to know that everyone has a different aspect of what Culture and diversity mean, and no one answer is the same. I think it just makes us all stop and think real hard of what Culture and Diversity really are it makes you think outside of your little box.

Hello Robin
I definitely agree when you said that it is very hard to come up with one correct definition of culture. Diversity is a lot more easier to define.
Hi Robin,
Two of the three people I asked were also unsure/ hesitant to define culture and diversity. I think that these two people (an almost 14 year old girl and a parent of two of the kids I coach) were hesitant since this is not a topic that comes up in their daily life. The third person I asked is a friend of mine from college who is also a teacher and she was quick to answer with an elaborate answer. I think she found the question easier to answer since as a teacher culture and diversity can often be "buzz" words in our occupation so she was prepared.
I also found it interesting that you said that the people you questioned did not think about their answers. I actually told the two people I asked who were hesitant about answering to say the first thing that came into their mind as it was most likely to be their true opinion/thoughts. I think they were afraid there was a definite "right" answer and a "wrong" answer.
I agree with your comment that no answer is wrong or right. I think that the answer to this question really depends on your experience with it. I know that my one friend who is of dominant culture and has not had much experience with learning about these things had a much more simple answer than my two friends who have in fact dealt with it in their own lives.
