Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions
Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions
This weeks readings has been
an eye opener until reading about microaggressions I did not have no clue what
the word meant. An example, I explored this week was at work with another
co-worker. We was short staff and had to do weight’s and height’s on all of our
children. Asked another teacher to help, but she got upset and said I do not
want to be in this room I am not doing anything for Dustyn, and my reply was it
is for julie and they was suppose to be done over two hours ago. We was all
stressed out over having so many children in one room. After the issue was done
and over with, I took a step back and realized this was a microaggression. We
need to think before we talk or even do the actions that happened during this
situation. I feel this is something that should never happen in the present of
children, even though they had no clue what was going on, but they can tell
when you are stressed or upset about something. I hear people everyday using
different things that puts you in mind of them using microaggressions, and it
is hard to believe that many people do not realize what they are saying hurts
people, but they seem to do not care either.
Until
watching the video and exploring my own issue this week with my co-worker,
really did not realize how the different words we say to each other can be very
harmful and hurtful all at the same time. This situation has opened my eyes to
be very careful of how I talk to other people, or even the way I look at
people. We need to also watch what kind of body language we express to others
as well.

Robin, you are right. That definitely was a scenario that should not have taken place in front of children and the attitude tells me that the person is not passionate about children or maybe they were having a bad day?
I agree with you. Our school nurse is similar to your coworker and it really bothers me whn people don't take into consideration who is around when they say something.
